Another good one Pastor! Just a question…did the two thieves die after Jesus died? After the earthquake, the Roman soldiers were going to break the legs of all three to speed up the execution (via suffocation) and when they got to Jesus they didn’t break His legs because He was already dead…thus the other two were still alive. So, they pierced His side (I guess as execution insurance) and blood and water flowed….if I remember correctly. Then maybe no one died in His presence? It’s an interesting thought that I never considered before…the idea that no one died in His presence. Pretty cool. He is, of course, the author of Life.

Thanks Jeremy. We of course don’t know if the thieves died BEFORE or AFTER Jesus, scripture isn’t explicit. My suggestion that nobody ever died in Christ’s presence is purely just that…suggestive. Although no text records death in Christ’s actual presence (that I am aware of), it’s a cool thought that the author of life would operate that way.

Thanks for listening! Glad to know it’s blessing you…

Check out John 19:33. This does seem to show that Jesus died before the thieves. It says (NASB) “…when they saw that He was ALREADY dead, they did not break His legs.” The thieves were not dead which is why the roman soldiers broke their legs…to speed up the suffocation process. Crucifixion was a gruesome death that often ended in suffocation. The victim’s lungs would fill with fluid and they would have to use their legs to push up on the cross to relieve the pressure and breath in air. With their legs broken, the thieves were not able to breath, thus speeding up death. I think this shows that your suggestion that no one died in His presence is a good one.
